Dal Canale di Magellano al Golfo de Penas- From the Magellan Chanal to the Golfo de Penas
Dopo i canali della terra del fuoco, appena entrati nella parte occidentale dello Stretto di Magellano assistiamo ad una scena agghiacciante, alla sinistra della nostra prua, scorgiamo il mare ribollire per il saltare di 4 orche .
Sembrano eccitate ed insistono nello stesso punto per più e più volte.
Capiamo cosa stà accadendo quando la coda di una balena compare lentamente fuori dall’acqua: le orche stanno attaccando in un impressionante danza mortale, la malcapitata balena, che sempre più stancamente emerge sino a scomparire.
Dopo la bocca del Magellano in Pacifico risaliamo verso nord i canali di Smith Sermiento e Messier, e dopo il breve stop in Puerto Eden continuiamo verso il golfo di Penas (golfo delle sofferenze), ma con una variante verso le Ande a Caleta Turtel, ove oltre alla trasmissione dati cercavamo delle nuove bombole del gas, prendendo tempo per attraversare con una finestra di venti accettabili il Golfo di Penas per il 14 ottobre.
Attraverseremo questo golfo ridossandoci dietro la penisola Taitao, per attendere un ulteriore miglioramento delle condizioni meteo, e cercare in questa zona selvaggia e vulcanica delle sorgenti termali ed eventuali cimiteri di balene segnalati da alcuni navigatori alcuni anni fa.

After the chanals of Tierra del Fuego, as soon as we enter the western part of the Strait of Magellan we witness a charming scene, to the left of our bow, we see the sea boiling due to the leap of 4 killer whales.
They seem excited and insist on the same spot over and over again.
We understand what is happening when the tail of a whale slowly appears out of the water: the killer whales are attacking in an impressive deadly dance, the unfortunate whale, which increasingly wearily emerges until it disappears.
After the mouth of the Magellan in the Pacific we go up northwards the channels of Smith, Sermiento and Messier, and after the short stop in Puerto Eden we continue towards the Gulf of Penas (gulf of suffering), but with a variant towards the Andes at Caleta Turtel, where in addition to data transmission we were looking for new gas cylinders, taking time to cross with a window of acceptable winds in the Gulf of Penas for 14 October.
We will cross this gulf sheltering behind the Taitao peninsula, to wait for a further improvement in weather conditions, and look for thermal springs and any whale cemeteries reported by some navigators a few years ago in this wild and volcanic area.
